Uzhhorod

Uzhhorod – is the fifth town with which Krosno signed a partnership agreement.

This 120,000 population town is the administrative center of the Zakarpattia Oblast (Trans-Carpathian Region) and the westernmost area of Ukraine, which borders Slovakia, Hungary, Poland and Romania; one of the oldest towns in Ukraine. The first mention about the town in historical chronicles appeared in 872. From the 10th century the Uzhhorod stronghold was a part of Old Ruthenia. From the mid-11th century to the 13th century the little town was a part of the Hungarian Kingdom and, later on, of the Habsburg state. In 1919 Uzhhorod became the capital of Trancarpathian Ruthenia, a part of Czechoslovakia. From November 1938 to October 1944 the town belonged to the territory of Hungary. After the town had been liberated by the Red Army, it was incorporated into the Soviet Ukraine as the centre of the Zakarpattia Oblast (Trans-Carpathian Region). Since the demise of the Soviet Union the town has been the capital of the Zakarpattia Oblast (Trans-Carpathian Region) of independent Ukraine.

Uzhhorod’s tourist attractions include:
- 13th-century Uzhhorod castle
- the Zakarpattia Oblast (Trans-Carpathian Region) Landscape Museum
- the 1777 Michael Angelo Orthodox church (Shelestovska)
- the 12th-century St. Ann’s Rotunda
