Midsummer Night’s celebration by the Wisłok river
This vibrant and spectacular open-air event, held on the feast of Saint John, draws on the traditions of the Midsummer Eve. It popularizes old customs such as wianki (the custom of throwing garlands of flowers into water on Midsummer Night’s Eve), common songs-singing, looking for a fern flower (believed to bloom on Midsummer’s Eve), dances, leaps over the bonfire, singing and saying spells to bring good luck in love and the ceremonies of purification in fire. The performers include regional folk groups from the Krosno region who stage the old Polish traditional rituals in their shows, sing Midsummer Night’s Eve songs. We also have visitors from Slovakia, Hungary and Ukraine. In breaks between performances the public can listen to the story of the Midsummer Night’s Eve and participate in competitions prepared especially for the festival, such as a folk love song competition.
